When Glenville drivers think about GMC vehicles, several words come to mind, powerful, rugged, tough. But one word that doesn’t come to mind is electric. GMC, however, is aiming to change that. Recently, GMC unveiled the 2022 HUMMER EV Edition 1. This all-electric SUV is a first-of-its-kind super-truck designed to blaze a path towards a zero-emission future.

What Does the 2022 HUMMER EV Offer?

To put their best foot forward in the electric market, GMC created something extraordinary in the HUMMER EV. The GMC HUMMER EV is designed to be the ultimate off-road vehicle - it comes with all-new features built to confront tough obstacles and terrain.

Since this is an electric vehicle, there is nothing under the hood but empty space. Instead, this beast comes with an electric motor that drives the front wheels and two more that drive the rear wheels. It’s estimated that these three motors will allow for a mind-blowing 1,000 horsepower.

Some of the other stand out features are:

  • Underbody Armor: Protects the batteries and allows better off-roading safety
  • UltraVision: Includes new front and rear underbody cameras to help drivers navigate obstacles and place wheels on and off the trail.
  • Off-road widgets: This displays the vehicle's functions and terrain status through the infotainment and driver information screens.

This new all-electric vehicle isn’t just an impressive electric vehicle, it’s an impressive vehicle, period.

What is GMC’s Plan for an Electric Future?

At current, GMC aims to reach a commitment of 30 new global electric vehicles by 2025. To reach this goal, the company is actively researching every aspect of what it takes to put millions of drivers in an Electric Vehicle (EV). The point of this research is to find an impactful way to create a zero-emissions future globally.

To create this future, GMC has positioned itself to design, engineer, and produce EVs for multiple styles and price points. They are also aggressively coming up with new software, batteries, and manufacturing advantages to stay competitive.

What Will Power These New Vehicles?

To ensure that their vehicles can reach this new future, GMC partnered with LG Energy Solutions to create the Ultium battery. The Ultium is a milestone in electric batteries, as its design allows for the building blocks of mass-market and high-performance electric vehicles.

What makes the Ultium battery so unique is that it can power vehicles from a single common cell found in most markets. On top of that, this battery also has interchangeable propulsion components.

Not only is this one-of-a-kind battery powerful, but it’s cost-effective too. Currently, the Ultium battery pack is about 40 percent cheaper than other EV batteries, and it’s estimated to be 60 percent cheaper by the second generation.

How Will These New Electric Vehicles Perform?

Due to the design of the battery and the architectural design of these new vehicles, GMC is looking to produce a range of automobiles like cars, SUVs, full-sized trucks, and even self-driving vehicles. It’s estimated that these upcoming electric vehicles could have performances like:

  • Going 0-60 in 3 to 8.5 seconds
  • An estimated range of 450 miles on a full charge
  • Powertrains that can reach 235 to 1000 horsepower with FWD, RWD, AWD, and performance AWD
  • Battery options from 50 to over 200 kWh.

How Will Charging Work with These New EVs?

The approach GMC targets is homes, offices, and public infrastructure seamlessly changing over to electric transportation. They also support a grid that utilizes renewable energy sources to make the entire EV charging process sustainable from the start.

GMC has also collaborated with seven major charging networks. Once the transition is complete, drivers will have access to nearly 60,000 plugs across the U.S. and Canada. At current, GMC has approximately 500 fast charging stalls that will be installed by the end of 2021. To increase that number, GMC is working with EVgo to build over 2,700 fast-charging stations by the end of 2025.

Building a Zero-Emission Future

With the unveiling of the 2022 HUMMER EV, the development of a new electric battery, and partnerships with several chief charging networks, it’s clear that GMCs commitment to a zero-emission future is real and here to stay. GMCs sights are set on a brighter future, and with support from Schenectady residents as well as everyone else, we can turn this lofty dream into a reality.
